What does summer mean to you? In our house it usually means cold lemonade and watermelon… a lot of watermelon. Since it has been hot in San Diego lately, I thought I would share with  you how I combined our two loves into one fun project we can reuse over and over again. These glass etched watermelon glasses are a subtle and fun addition to any summer party or even afternoon in the backyard. The best part? They are dishwasher safe, because we all know what really matters! If you like this idea, even more are just a click away!

While this project could easily be done with glasses  you have on hand (must be real glass, not acrylic, plastic, metal or anything else), I went and picked a couple of four packs pretty affordably so I would have a complete set without affecting my everyday glasses. In addition to glasses you will need:

  • Glass etching cream (I buy mine online)
  • Gloves and eye protection
  • Wood popsicle stick
  • Sponge brush
  • Surface covering
  • Tape (painters tape or a washi tape you aren’t in love with)
  • Scrap vinyl

To get started, I taped off my glasses about an inch up from the bottom to be the ‘rind’ of the watermelon. Then I used my digital cutting machine to cut some seed shapes from scrap vinyl, if you don’t have a cutting machine, this could be done pretty easily with a craft knife and, if needed, additional tape. It is important that your stencil is fully adhesive so the cream does not get under it and you have clean lines on your image. Once you have your seeds, start placing them around the glass, I started with a few but ended up going back and adding more. After my seeds were placed, I went back and added tape under each one in case the cream slide down below the stencil. Since I was putting the cream all over the glass, it needed to stand up while it was setting and I wanted to avoid any unwanted marks.

When it comes applying the glass etching cream please make sure to wear gloves and eye protection. I am going to say it again, in caps, because it is serious, not because I am yelling at you, mkay? PLEASE WEAR GLOVES AND EYE PROTECTION. Literally, I don’t glass etch without either my glasses or eye protection and gloves, this stuff is as serious as it is awesome. I used the wooden stick to apply to the seeds and then to the bottom, the sponge brush helped spread it out over the larger ‘rind’ area, it also helped give me the streaky watermelon look.

Let the cream sit according to package directions which may vary depending on the cream you use. I let mine sit for 5 to 10 minutes before I washed it off. Please grab a new set of gloves for washing the cream off and don’t forget eye protection! Washing in a stainless steal sink is usually the best option.

One of my favorite things to do with watermelon is cube it up and place it on a plastic wrap lined tray and then pop it in the freezer. Then I have easy watermelon ice cubes which are the perfect addition to a cool summer Minute Maid® Lemonade and my summer beverage bar! I love adding fruit to mix with Minute Maid® Lemonade and Sprite®, it makes a fun and fresh drink sure to cool you down on even the hottest of days.
