My daughter loves to read. In addition to that, we have plenty of friends and family that love to provide us with books to support this habit. For the most part i think that this is great, but I will be honest, an overflowing basket, slipping from stepping on a book on wood floors, and books everywhere kind of puts a damper on it at moments for me. For this reason, I thought that it was time to create a reading space, or book nook, for my daughter and her growing collection.
Since I chose to create this space in her bedroom, which already has a pink/black./white Minnie Mouse theme, I added that flair into the design and fabrics I chose. This white shelf has been in every room of our house, but currently it is a great option for a bench and book shelf for this space for Avery.
All it took to put a Minnie spin on this plain white shelf was some black faux leather contact paper over the top and some white vinyl circles in a polka dot pattern. Then I grabbed some pink polka dot fabric to make this bow pillow and a fuzzy black throw pillow to add a little comfort (the black pillow reminded me of all the fuzzy Minnie and Mickey stuffed animals). The books filled in the the bottom but I wanted to add a little something else and that is where the boxes came in.
I love these little DIY book boxes I made inspired by ikea shelf racks that people have been using for the same purpose. They are perfect and Avery can reach them easily from the bench and from her bed- because it is every night that she goes to bed with at least two books in bed with her. I shared the quick and easy tutorial on how to make and install these over on The Inspiration Network today, you should check it out!!
