They are the thing I want for each room, but my goodness, I don’t want to give my left foot for one!
They are so expensive!
That is when I decided there must be another way so I started looking around for things that could be rugs, ways to make my own rugs and so on.
Enter my random trip to Lowes.
So here is the thing about Lowes, I have been hearing more and more about them but the only one I knew of in my area was in are really busy spot and shared a shopping center with a Costco and Ikea, sounds great in theory but the super busy streets mixed with a constently full parking lot from 3 popular stores doesn’t make it an attractive place to drive to, kinda sucks the motivation out of it.
But I looked it up and found one even closer to my house and very easy to get to!
That was either the best thing or worst thing that could have happened, depends on which side of my marriage you ask.
Avery was napping, Scott was on the laptop and Wade was watching a couple of his shows last Saturday so I thought I would go check it out.
I walked around an hour, I didn’t really go to spend a ton of money but there were so many affordable things that it was hard to choose what I wanted! That is when I got to the painting section.
And I saw it.
One of the top 10 blogging craft materials.
Cue spot light and “ahhhhhhhhhh” soundtrack.
Even better, the 4×6 drop cloth was $5. The 6×9 is $10. Those are rug prices I could live with!!
So I grabbed a small one because I figured I should try it out on a rug for Avery’s room before I committed to a large one for the living room.
I didn’t want to do anything too elaborate because things are crazy here at casa de Barbour and I wanted to kinda see how it painted at first.
It was pretty simple! First I had to iron it though, you know if I actually iron something, it is a necessary step because I avoid it at all costs.
Then I marked it at each foot, I used yard stick and pen. I made marks done one side, the other, the middle and then in the middle of each half so that I had almost a dotted line at each foot marker to follow.
Then I taped it off, first I did it for my marked lines at one foot. Then I added tape in between because I thought it needed more. I added the little pieces of tape to mark the strips I wanted to leave plain.
Then I painted them, this is where that other dollar came in, I am always grabbing the reject paint samples at home depot for .50 and so I have built up a little collection and I had two colors of pink to use for alternating strips.
I let it dry and pulled the tape and was done! It really is that simple!
Of course before I could get any pictures of it, I went and cleaned up Avery’s room and made her bed. As any other parent of a toddler knows, if you have just cleaned something up, they are drawn to it to fix what you have just done. I had the yellow blanket folded at the bottom of the bed and she was not happy with that. She had to move it and lay it out while I was grabbing pictures “me need make my big girl bed mommy” ok, be my guest.
Made it a little more distracting to take pictures but whatever, she is cute. Doesn’t the rug look good too?
There we go! I am going to go get some adhesive velcro to hold it down if that is needed so that will up the price but I am sure it would still be an under $10 rug which works for me!!
Still making her bed, you can’t really see the colors of the room but it does look pretty cute in there!
Now to work on the bigger one for the living room!!
