Denim Ribbon Skirt Tutorial

I am not a the most skilled with a sewing machine. But that doesn’t stop me from trying!

I have been wanting to work on some summer clothes for Avery and this upcycle idea came to me about 2 seconds before I started making it.

I had a pair of jeans that I really wasn’t a fan of when they did fit Avery, but then she grew out of them so I thought it would be the perfect chance to try one of those pants to skirts ideas.

Here is my version:

The best part is I used old jeans and scrap ribbon! All stuff I had on hand!

First I grabbed the jeans and cut them just above the inseam.

Then I grabbed all kinds of scrap ribbon. I just went with spring colors in whatever size, I just made sure it was all grosgrain.

Also grab a whole bunch of pins.

Then you are going to cut your ribbon, I chose 4 1/4 inches. I just cut a few pieces of each ribbon to start and went back to cut more if needed. I did use quite a bit and this was a 2T pair of pants.

Then fray check all the edges of all your ribbon, I am a loyal lighter person now, free, doesn’t have a drying time, less messy and so on.

Then you start pinning all your ribbon face down on the hem of the skirt. I started with the thicker pieces first and went from there.

Then it is to the sewing machine! I started in the back in the middle.

After that, I folded each piece down and pinned it once more, you could iron but this was just easier.

Then sew once again, hint, the tweezers do a great job of getting the pins with small heads out without a problem, especially if you rock fake nails like me :).

Done!

Now you bribe your child with her favorite color shirt and flower and her fancy “glitter shoes” to put the skirt on and model for you. Or you just get them dressed if you don’t have to jump through all those hoops.

Wow, she is freakin’ adorable. Just sayin’.
