Mosaic Cinder Block Planter- Part One

I don’t know why, but the people who lived at our house before us must have collected cinder blocks because there are A LOT in the backyard.

We wanted to figure out a way to use them and came up with the idea to make them into large planters for a veggie and herb garden. We can’t do it in the ground as easily because we wouldn’t be able to keep the dogs out of it so this uses them up and gets our garden off the ground. Don’t you love a win win situation?

Check out part two here!!

I didn’t just want to stack them up because that would be kinda tacky, so my creative side kicked in and we broke up a bunch of tiles and did a mosaic on them. We only got three done today but it is okay to have long term projects as well as quick and easy ones, right?!! Plus the whole process in one post would be looooooooooooong.
Here is the first step.

What you need:

  • Cinder blocks
  • Liquid Nails
  • Broken tile pieces

First clean off your cinder blocks.

(in addition to their addiction to cinder blocks, the last people who lived here thrashed the backyard, that is why there is the grass-like carpet. I wanted something to put under the tent so I could bring Avery outside and not worry about all the crap on the ground getting on her. )

Break up your tiles.

Place the tiles where you want them.

Get out the liquid nails and secure all of them where they are.

And you are done! That is until you finish the other 13 that are needed lol. We got three done today, and Scott even helped which is always fun!
Avery is not quite old enough yet, bummer, but she had a good time watching all of us in her bouncer.

Hopefully we will get them all done by the end of the week and then we can grout them! I will post more once we are at the next step.

Thanks Michelle! I have lots of cinder blocks left over from where we built our house! I showed it to my husband and he liked it too! I am thinking of putting them around my mailbox and put flowers in them. That would be cute don’t you think! :)
